This week's digest is for the "wild-of-heart who are kept in cages". We bring you icons who have shown that it pays to go against the grain and revel in unbridled individuality, even in the small things. A film by Dennis Hopper, photographs from Klein, a bloody American epic from Cormac, and more. We hope you're inspired to loosen up and run wild a bit this summer. Enjoy.
The Digest
THE MAVERICK EDITION:
THE LAST MOVIE - DENNIS HOPPER
From one of Hollywood's most radical mavericks, the mythologized cult classic, The Last Movie. The film folklore, production history, and its director are as fascinating as the film itself. Now in remastered in 4K, the Criterion Channel brings this cine-meta experience that still pushes the way storytelling is told through film. Ditch the popcorn, brew a cup, and enjoy the trip.
400 MILES FROM L.A. 1955-56 - LEE HAZLEWOOD
A true maverick and pioneer of 'cowboy psychedelia', Lee Hazlewood beat to his own drum, or rather, strum? '400 Miles from L.A.' features 24 demos that precede his commercial success. The tracks are raw, intimate, and preludes to a uniquely unsung career. This is the perfect weekend soundtrack to unwind and rethink.
BLOOD MERIDIAN - CORMAC MCCARTHY
The famously unfilmable epic from Cormac McCarthy is considered by many to be the most daring work of contemporary American literature. In Harold Bloom's words, "Blood Meridian is a canonical imaginative achievement, both an American and a universal tragedy of blood." McCarthy's use of language, landscape, and character transcends the carnage and reaches literary heights among Melville and Faulkner. McCarthy remains matchless.
WILLIAM KLEIN
“I came from the outside, the rules of photography didn't interest me. There were things you could do with a camera that you couldn't do with any other medium,” he reflected. “I thought it would be good to show what's possible, to say that this is as valid of a way of using the camera as conventional approaches.”
ICED POUR-OVER W/ METHODICAL COFFEE
After his time playing with Miles, he trekked out on his own as a band leader, forming The Bill Evans Trio. With Scott LaFaro (bassist) and Paul Motian (drummer), the original lineup played one of the greatest jazz recordings of all time. Remastered and released on 3 disks. Enjoy.
BLUE CABANA STRIPE SEERSUCKER BUTTON-DOWN
Some bold linear structure for summer 2021 (and beyond) in the form of the Seersucker Cabana Button Down Shirt. Made in Italy, the definite vertical stripe brings a graphic sense of order to any outfit, working especially well when teamed with paired-back pleat-fronted chinos or smart indigo denim. It’s a versatile, easy look that flatters every physique.
