The Digest: Context and Expression

CONTEXT AND EXPRESSION:

This week we explore two integral considerations whether dressing, reading, enjoying art, or merely existing. We hear tirelessly that 'context is everything', yet it remains an understatement. And expression is arguably the most fundamental need for self-actualization. Here a few odds and ends to explore this complementary relationship.

'O'MAST' (2014)

In appreciating any art form, context is key. O'Mast tells the story of the heritage and culture of tailoring in Naples, Italy. Steeped in rich history, Neapolitan bespoke tailoring remains one of the greatest expressions of sartorial excellence. This is required viewing for anyone who appreciates tailoring and wants to learn more about the people who've perfected it.

VALET ISSUE NO.2

Expressions of timeless themes, each issue of Valet interweaves style, art, literature, and long-form explorations into classic menswear. Valet doesn't teach its readers what to think, rather it pushes them to think beyond. Issue No. 2 is out now, get yours.

'GRANT' (2020) - HISTORY CHANNEL

The American story is woven together from some of its most interesting figures. Hiram Ulysses Grant is an essential part of our story, told here in three episodes through excellent reenactments, commentary, and archival sources.

'SANTE FE POTTERY HOUSE - FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT'

Originally designed by FLW in 1942, it was a "patio surrounded a house", a beautiful expression of the surrounding geography. Revived from the collection of unbuilt works, Taliesin Architects brought the plans to life in Sante Fe.

BRETT ALLEN JOHNSON

Over the past year I've found a new appreciation for artists who express the beauty and inherent adventure of the American West. Brett Allen Johnson is a master. Go follow and scroll through his work to ignite one's inner West.
